Pupil Voice
At our school, children have plenty of opportunities to have a say on how the school is run.
A selection of children from each class meet with subject leaders to share their views about different subject areas.
Each class chooses pupils to represent them on the School Council and the Eco Council. These children take ideas from their classmates to meetings and have a chance to report back afterwards.
School Council
Our main focus for this year, selected from the School Development Plan:
- to make our playtimes even better with a choice of activities to take part in.
- to have play leaders to support activities at lunchtime.
We will also be looking at how we can support environmental issues and make children in school aware of how we can save energy, reduce plastic waste and keep our environment pleasant to work in.
Eco Council
William Cobbett School has an Eco School Council with representatives from Year 1 to Year 6, alongside a teacher and governor. The representatives are elected annually by their peers, who are encouraged to vote for the class member who has communicated effectively their commitment to and interest in environmental causes. The Eco School Council discusses issues concerning the environmental health of the school community and wider environmental issues. It’s remit covers energy use, travel, nature and wildlife.
Eco Council meetings are held every half term. Children discuss how to promote environmentally friendly behaviour and raise awareness within our school community. Their ideas are then incorporated in an action plan and implemented school wide, for example activities to promote sustainable travel to school. There is a chance in every meeting for children to express their own ideas as to which direction or issue they feel the council should address in subsequent meetings.
In April this year our school was awarded bronze accreditation from the Modeshift Stars Travel Plans initiative. To receive the accreditation the school completed a number of initiatives which promote and raise awareness of sustainable travel and greener choices.
